Separate Peace Research Paper free essay sample

A Separate Peace,† John Knowles once said, â€Å"Looking back now across fifteen years I could see with great clarity the fear I had lived in, which must mean that in the interval I had succeeded in a very important undertaking: I must have made my escape from it† (Knowles 10). The â€Å"fear† mentioned previously, is a result of the times Knowles lived in, a time of a war, which had even affected his comfortable life at a private school. A Separate Peace,† by John Knowles, was influenced by his life experience at his time spent at Exeter Academy, and the ongoing war, World War II. The period of time John Knowles spent at Exeter Academy influenced the execution of his novel, â€Å"A Separate Peace. † Several real life events, objects and people made their way into a complicated web of friendship at the Devon Academy. For example, the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session, first mentioned on page 51, in chapter four of the novel, was a real socie ty. We will write a custom essay sample on Separate Peace Research Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In an article done by Bernard Carragher, Knowles admits that there was a Super Suicide Society, and that he was part of it, â€Å"Knowles also admits there was a Super Suicide Society, but there were no broken legs or deaths. â€Å"In fact, I was the one that got a serious cut on my foot and it was I who was hobbling around all summer on crutches. . . † says Knowles. † In the novel, the young men create a Super Suicide Society, and it is run by Finney. In order to get in, you must go through initiation, which was jumping of the tree branch by the river, the boys even continue to jump out of it every night, justifying it by saying that they were â€Å"Preparing for the war,† (Knowles 22). The main characters are actually based off of real people as well; John Heyl (Phineas) and Parker Stevenson (Gene Forrester). â€Å"The story is of two roommates- the quiet, intellectual Gene (Parker Stevenson) and the outgoing, brilliantly athletic Finney (John Heyl) at Devon (i. e. Exeter) during the crucial summer of ’42, trying to establish a eace away from the furor of World War II,† (Carragher D). Living during World War II also influenced the execution of Knowles’ novel â€Å"A Separate Peace. † World War II was the largest and most destructive conflict in human history (World War II). The U. S. industry was busy building ships, planes and submarines, which was the most direct effect on the U. S. (World Wa r II). Although America had not been attacked on the home front, many Americans were put into states of shock, and surprisingly this brought up a new sense of patriotism; such patriotism seen in â€Å"A Separate Peace,† and even demonstrated by Elwin Leper Lepellier. Leper is the first to enlist in the army, in chapter nine (Knowles 123). This enlistment scares the boys at Devon, because it made the war more real, and it reminds them of the draft. Seeing that all the boys at Devon are nearing the age of adulthood, they could possibly be drafted (Knowles). In an interview Knowles expressed his and Heyl’s opinions of the draft, and how it felt for them, â€Å"One connecting thread between the Exeter classes of ’42 and ’71 was the war and the draft, two topics which Heyl has definite ideas about. I would kill for my country,† he says, â€Å"if it was invaded, but I refuse to go to Vietnam and kill somebody I don’t even know. When I was 18, I was almost drafted, and if it wasn’t for my asthma getting me classified 4F, I probably would have had to go,† says Heyl,† (Carragher 18). These quotes express the impact of the war, and the fear it installed in everyone’s hearts, especially the heart s of young men, like the boys at Devon Academy, and in John Knowles, in his younger years. The author of â€Å" A Separate Peace,† John Knowles once said, â€Å"Looking back now across fifteen years I could see with great clarity the fear I had lived in, which must mean that in the interval I had succeeded in a very important undertaking: I must have made my escape from it† (Knowles 10). The â€Å"fear† mentioned previously, is a result of the times Knowles lived in, a time of a war, which had even affected his comfortable life at a private school. In conclusion, â€Å"A Separate Peace,† by John Knowles, was influenced by his life experience at his time spent at Exeter Academy, and the ongoing war, World War II.

Molecular and ellular Biology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Molecular and ellular Biology - Essay Example Genes may be incorporated into bacteria, plants or animals. In this process recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology is used to incorporate gene of interest into organisms and that organism in which gene is inserted is said to be genetically engineered. Through this process off springs with unique characters are produced. Recombinant DNA is also referred to as Chimera. By the combination of two different strands of DNA a new strand of DNA is obtained. The first step in genetic engineering involved the production of hormone insulin which is important and helps the cells to properly absorb sugar. In recombinant DNA technology recombinant DNA is made by splicing a small fragment of a foreign DNA into a small molecule that can replicate on its own such as bacterial plasmid as a result a clone of inserted DNA can be obtained. AN organism that receives a foreign DNA is called transgenic organism and these organisms can be used in research or in commercial applications such as production of human insulin in transgenic bacteria (which receives genes from human responsible for the production of insulin). This application gives the idea that how important DNA recombinant technology is.(Recombinant DNA technology). Two classes of enzymes play an important role in DNA recombinant technology. Restriction endonucleases: They recognize specific sites on DNA and cleave DNA at that site into smaller fragments. DNA ligases: They link the foreign DNA with the vector DNA. Cloning of DNA involves the following steps: 1: First step in making recombinant DNA is to isolate donor and vector DNA. 2: Cloning vector is cleaved with restriction endonucleases. 3: gene of interest is obtained by cleaving chromosome of foreign DNA with the same restriction endonuclease into smaller fragments. 4: Fragments are ligated to the cloning vector by DNA ligase as a result a recombinant vector is obtained. 5: This recombinant DNA is introduced into the host cell where it replicates and produces copies of recombinant DNA. (Lehninger, Principles of Biochemistry fourth edition). Recombinant DNA technology in the synthesis of insulin: Insulin is an important hormone which regulates the storage of carbohydrates in the body. It is secreted by the beta cells present in the pancreas islets of langerhans. Insulin is a small protein and is composed of two polypeptide chains which are linked together by disulfide bonds. When blood glucose level is high insulin is secreted into the blood stream and removes excess of glucose from the body. Human insulin is the only known protein which can be produced in bacteria by DNA recombinant technology in a way that its structure and composition resembles the original molecule. In diabetes patients problems are associated with the production of insulin due to which sugar increases to dangerous levels which could be life threatening. These patients are treated with insulin which is produced in another organism. Although insulin can be produced in animals whose insulin resembles human insulin in terms of composition with minor variations like bovine and porcine insulin but, it was observed that when bovine and porcine insulin were injected into the patient’s body antibodies were produced against them thereby, neutralizing it’s action and producing inflammatory response at the site of injection. These problems suggest that a suitable vector like E.coli could be used to produce insulin. E.coli is a common inhabi tant of the human digestive tract and is a key organism used in the production of insulin by genetic engineering. Following are the steps involved in the production of insulin from a bacterial host. 1: Isolate gene: The gene that produces insulin in human is isolated and is

Rising Costs of Higher Education Research Paper

Rising Costs of Higher Education - Research Paper Example The assistance has led to an increase in demand for higher education and the students have greatly enrolled for courses in the universities. The universities have taken an advantage of this and have increased the fees that students should pay for higher education with an argument that these students have money from these funds. Government funding to the institutions have also declined but the universities have not reduced their budgets. This means that the money will be extended to the students in terms of tuition and fees. Another issue is the lack of market discipline. Different departments in the institutions bloat their budgets so that they gain more power and get their work done. This has again led to the rise in the cost of higher education. Ineffective price competition among the institutions has also made a major contribution to the rise in the cost of higher education. Competition is also there where each institution wants the best lecturers and that means that they have to pay more. There are also government regulations that require the universities to pay some amounts of money to people like workers who construct buildings in the universities and pay some other fees in relation to research. This increases the costs of running the universities and eventually leads to increased fees on the part of the student. This paper will seek to analyze the different factors that have led to the rising costs of higher education. This research was done to identify the various factors that have led to the rising costs of higher education. In conducting the research, the following questions were put into consideration. What are the major causes of the rising costs on higher education What role do the universities play in the rising costs of higher education Does the government play any role in promoting the rise in the costs of higher education In answering these research questions, both primary and secondary sources have been chosen. One of the primary sources chosen is the book: Going Broke by Degree: Why College Costs too Much by Richard K. Vedder. This book tries to discuss different aspects of the reasons as to why the costs of higher education have risen. Some of the ideas that have been discussed here are the issues of government and other third-party provider funding where fees have been increased because the students are getting some funding from the government and other third-party providers. Competition issues have also been discussed where institutions are competing with their peers in terms of development and the money needed for development is extended to student fees. Government regulations have also been identified as a factor that leads to the rise in the costs of higher education in that the government regulations require the school to pay some money in areas such as research, construction, etc. The other issue discussed is the lack of market discipline where departments and deans will bloat their budgets so that they have some power and resources required to do their job. The other source used is a print PDF: Books and Manuals Application Briefs that identifies the factors that affect the rising cost of higher education. Some of the factors identified include: declining government funding where the government does not fund the education of students in universities fully and also does not support all the students who join these institutions, fierce

Essay --

Sixteenth-century people might define â€Å"black† similar to the way the Oxford English Dictionary would define it; something filthy or dirty, an obscure or deadly idea, involving decease concepts, and awful thoughts. They compared black to something pertaining to the devil. Since this was the concept of the word black, Englishmen began to believe that black people were derived from the actual word and made the sixteenth-century people believe that they are bad people to the world; when in reality, the blacks were as normal as the Englishmen. Most Englishmen believed that the main reason why the African’s skin are so dark was because of the sun. This theory was misleading due to the fact that Americans, who were in the same line as the Africans, still had light colored skin. The theories included in the text changed the way Englishmen viewed the Africans. To them, the Africans were considered a â€Å"novelty† and were ugly by just their complexion. Most Englishmen and Christians are familiar with the concept of heathenism. Englishmen would commonly differentiate the heathenisms of Indians and Negroes. Heathenism was typically a general refusal to take suitable values. The communication between both sides was very distinct and difficult; though, Englishmen would only make it seem as if they weren’t meeting the requirements. The sexual behaviors that the Africans performed were normal to the Englishmen. They took their sexuality and thought of it as a way that animals behave themselves. The comparison of the Negro to the animal was like calling them creatures and it disrespected them. The interpretation strengthened the prejudice towards the Africans because it made the Englishmen acknowledge them for the way they are. The pr... ...ering American industry. Henry Clay’s opinion on Free Trade as expressed in the document is that it never existed and that if we do destroy our laws on trade to make it free then it wouldn’t be free until other foreign nations have made theirs free as well. Lastly, he lists that America would be able to accommodate themselves to this unjust from the way America is already flexible to changes. According to Harriet Hanson Robinson, one of the primary reasons why women worked in the mills was to make sure that the men of the family can continue pursuing their education so that it can later benefit the family economically. I believe that the emancipation of slaves was passed before the right of women to vote because slaves were seen under women and were treated harshly. They didn’t realize that women were being treated harshly as well by not being given equal rights.

Plato ethics Essay

Every person does not do what he believes as to be the best, but however, there is an open door for a person to act on an appetitive attitude that conflicts with rational attitudes what is good. Some conflicting attitudes are dependent to different objects. This external conflict does not necessarily require an internal division of psychology attitudes (Irwin, 1999). The psychological theory of Plato is a bit complicating than the basic division that might be suggested by an individual. There are various types of appetite attitudes which may be appealing for a person; however, some may be unnecessary but lawful, while others unnecessary and uncontrollable. A part from these appetite attitudes, there are also five pure psychological constitutes. Theses are aristocratically constituted individual, democratically constituted individual, olgarchically constituted individual, timocraticalliy constituted individual, and lastly, tyramically constituted individual. In all sense, the independent among the virtues is not simpler in anyway, since the unfair person in most case fails to wise, courageous and temperate. Lastly, in Plato’s view, the individual can be characterized by his lawless behaviors as enslaved to do what it wants, full of disorder, regret, as poor and disgruntled, and as fearful. Therefore, for one to succeed in life, he must be composed and decide to do what he thinks is better to him. All that one should struggle to do is to ensure that justice is practice to in the manner acceptable to all.

CB Analysis

There was definitely a gap between these two States, ultimately creating a need for food (Sabina, 246). B) What product and brand did you choose? In this class thus far we have definitely learned that products can always be copied or replaced, but brands are often unique and timeless. May have chosen a simple Subway sandwich without even getting the entire value meal, but I chose to go with a brand that is known to always have fresh vegetable options, with quick service. C) What type of value did this purchase provide? At the time, purchasing this Subway sandwich proved very valuable to me.I was in a rush to head to class and needed to fuel my body with something hat could give me some substance to work through the rest of the day. Though just a sandwich, it was very necessary that I eat to continue my long day of studying and meetings. D) What was the type of risk involved with this purchase? The biggest risk involved in me purchasing this Subway sandwich was that it might not have the freshest toppings, and that the customer service might be slow. I knew when I was going to purchase my sandwich that the risk of me losing money or regretting my decision to buy the sandwich would be relatively low.Ultimately, I view this purchase as a low-risk purchase. E) What evaluative criteria were used? We learned from our book that evaluative criteria are attributes consumers consider when reviewing alternative solutions to an issue or problem (Fabian, 355). In this situation, my problem was that I was starving and in a time crunch in between classes. When I was choosing Subway as my meal of choice, I knew that potential benefits would be that it would be a healthy meal in a quick time frame. Considered going to Jimmy Johns, but it was quite a bit of distance from my apartment and I didn't have time for that. The criteria used were proximity to my apartment, price, and quality. ) Did you conduct an internal or external information search? Why or why not? I used internal in formation search, involving me retrieving knowledge about products or services from my memory (Fabian, 248). Because this purchase involved such limited decision-making, felt confident in my ability to use my past experiences at Subway to decide that I should go back there for the same, quick service. Was confronted with a need to satisfy my hunger, and I knew I could rely on myself given the time constraints. ) If you conducted an internal information search, explain your evoked set (consideration set), your inert set and your inept set. My consideration set consisted of Jimmy John's, a close sandwich alternative with great customer service. Subway marketers might want to consider why it is G's always has the best customer service, but in this case Subway won me over because of their proximity to my apartment. To be honest, did not have an inert set, or any alternatives to which was indifferent to (Fabian 249); Subway was the perfect place! One option I considered to be apart of my inept set was the Korean restaurant next to the Subway. It was unacceptable for me to even consider due to me not wanting o try out a new restaurant that appeared to take a long time to get waited on. H) What was the cost of this information search? Please explain your answer in detail, don't just give an estimated dollar figure. The monetary cost of this information search was free. Having said that, I do consider the cost to this information search to have been the time spent making the decision about where and what should eat. As was going through what little alternatives there were to Subway, I may have been wasting time I could have been using to study and prepare for class.Luckily, there was not too much mime wasted deciding how to satisfy my hunger, but there definitely was at least some low cost associated with my internal information search. This information search did turn into me buying the sandwich, so it did influence that small purchase. B. Extended Decision Making Pur chase-Apple phone 6 10/1/14 a) What was the need (actual state vs.. Desired state)? To be honest, really did not have a true need for a new phone, so my actual state was that I had an older phone that was working completely fine, but I did not have the new phone 6.My desired state was to own the newest Phone, because I always love using the latest Apple products. As our book pointed out, states Often change (Fabian, 247). Someone may have, at one time, been satisfied with a cell phone they had, until one day a newer, cooler version comes along and is the new desire. B) What product and brand did you choose? Chose to purchase a cell phone, but most of my money goes for paying for the Apple brand. Paying for the Apple brand is not only paying the company for their uniqueness, but it is paying for me to have brand satisfaction with my mobile device.Products that buy often become instantly meaningful, but t is the Apple brand that lasts longer and becomes more and more meaningful over t ime. C) What type of value did this purchase provide? This purchase of an phone provided me with a value that truly satisfied my need to have the latest technology and the most efficient APS. Like I mentioned before, I really am an avid Apple user, and I enjoy being able to quickly pull up any information for classes or companies that I am recruiting for. Additionally, I really believe that the monetary value will hold for the most part over the next year-?if kept in good condition. ) What was the type of sis involved with this purchase? The biggest risk in buying the phone 6 was that it might not be all that it added up to be, and therefore not worth what paid for it. I would like to consider that I minimized my risk when I chose to do research on the Internet and saw whatever pros and cons there were on the new phone. Having said all this, my risk definitely increases the more money and time put into a good (unlike a sandwich). E) What evaluative criteria were used? The attributes I considered when comparing the phone 6 to the Samsung Galaxy phone, were size, price, speed, sound, quality, and appearance. It would take quite some phone to pull my brand loyalty away from Apple products, but think it is always necessary to keep my options open when brainstorming solutions to my problems or needs (Fabian, 256). F) Did you an external information search because I wanted to ask an expert, or in this case, research the Internet's various sources (Fabian, 249). Chose the Internet as my number one source because of how easy it is to obtain information and it takes me less time to comprehend a report when it is in a compiled list like I found online. G) If you conducted an external information search, explain how oh did this using terminology. When I conducted an external information search, I really already knew what my evaluative criteria were. Typed in the search engine a question such as â€Å"How big or attractive is the phone 6. † I was immediately presente d with the newest reviews on the phone, and faced information overload after awhile. Began not being able to assimilate all of the information. It made me think that I may want to be more specific with my future searches (Fabian, 249). H) What was the cost of this information search? Please explain your answer in detail, don't just give an estimated liar figure. The cost of this information search was the time I spent researching on the Internet. Fortunately, I did not have to spend too long evaluating the phone, but like I said before did get a little overwhelmed. Though the search was free, I probably sacrificed time I could have been getting some reading or homework done for all of my classes. This information search did eventually turn into me purchasing the new phone, so it did indeed lead me into paying something. 2. Psychological Variables Charley Burger and Fry 9/25/13 One of the best deals on campus is on Thursdays at Charley.Their burger ND fry basket is not only huge in si ze, but it is only $4. 99. This Thursday was one of the best nights because I had turned in a big proposal for class due right before I went to dinner. Because I was in such a great mood, my self esteem for the night was at an all time high, encouraging me to treat myself to dinner (Fabian, 117). Struck There have been many days thus far where have had to rely on caffeine to allow me to get my homework and studying done. There are many variables that have encouraged me to purchase coffee, including my own awareness and have the proximity and convenience of Struck.Getting coffee often served as a motivation for me to study even more. There were nights my anxiety was actually calmed down knowing I could rely on Struck being right in the Winter Garden to help me get through all of the homework. Really love the high relationship quality and loyalty I have with Struck (Fabian, 25). 3. Social Influence Cottage Inn Pizza 9/13/14 This Saturday was a football Saturday where we were tired and so upset about the Michigan loss to Notre Dame that we decided to order pizza. TO be honest, I wasn't even hungry, but I decided to follow the group and pitch in to order the pizza. When in a social environment, I really don't need much persuasion for many small purchases, as it often easier to go with crowd (Fabian, 149) Bush's Grocery Store 9/5/14 This was the Saturday of syllabus week, meaning it was our last chance to enjoy life before glasswork picked up. My friend Garage not only suggested that we go to her sister's apartment complex, but that we go buy groceries to throw a big cookout. Decided to conform to what she wanted and help purchase groceries at a place had never been (Sabina, 140). 4. Purchase Influence Bolos Mediterranean Chicken Schwartz 9/1 0/14When was in the Sessile Cafe, I was just buying a soft drink when a friend of mine came up and said I should try the Chicken Schwartz because it is Mediterranean Wednesday. The biggest influence in this purchase situation w as my friend's word of mouth information. This information was sudden, but had he not informed me Of this deal I would have never made the purchase (Sabina, 161). Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt 9/7/14 My friend Jacob works for a Flock Tag company who was running a special where if you signed up for a Flock Tag Card, you would get free frozen yogurt from Orange Leaf. The promotion, or purchase influence in this case, was what ultimately lured me into becoming an Orange Leaf addict and this trip being one of many trips (Fabian, 320). 5. Buying Patterns When looking at my complete journal, I definitely have recognized a couple of buying patterns. The first, and most obvious was the purchase of Struck coffee more and more as the weeks went on. This is partly because of the fact that the seasons have changed and it has been cooler. I also attribute it to the subliminal persuasion using their aroma as pass by the Struck in Ross (Fabian, 53).The second buying pattern that I have recognized is th e purchasing late at night on Thursdays and Friday. Those two days are by far the most expensive days of the week for me (Fabian, 328). 6. Post-Recession Consumer The biggest part of the article that pertained to my consumer behavior habits was when it talked about the consumers being more saws and aware of marketing techniques (Gerbera, 3). I feel as if I have grown increasingly aware of how businesses can manipulate naive buyers into spending marked up goods. Looking back at my purchases, I really feel that was never misled into purchasing something shouldn't have. The article said â€Å"Generosity binds a company to its community and its stakeholders (Gerbera, 4). † Couldn't agree more with that quote. When a Struck employee or a worker at a grocery Store goes the extra mile to put a smile on my face or assist me, I feel more and more consumer loyalty and allegiance to the business. 7. Changes After looking through and observing my buying behavior, don't see myself making a ny changes to my purchasing habits. The worst habits that I had or the days where would spend the most amount of money really weren't something that I considered to be that bad in the scope of things.

Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra Essay Example

Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra Essay Example Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra Essay Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra Essay Shakespeare presents the strength of Cleopatras determination in act 3, scene 7, as Enobarbus attempts to dissuade her from joining Antony in the battlefield. Despite being told that in Rome, Antony, already criticized for his frivolity, is mocked for handing over his command to women and a eunuch, she hyperbolically dismisses his opinion by saying Sink Rome, and their tongues rot that speak against us. This scene also contains the only incidence of Cleopatra lacking sexual awareness, not recognizing the euphemism provided by Enobarbus that to have stallions and mares serving together in war invites disaster, as the stallions will only be interested in copulating (although the shock embedded in her response what ist you say could be spoken with sarcasm in performance). This display of determination on Cleopatras part allows Shakespeare to emphasise the level of blame placed on the Queen by both Enobarbus and Scarus for the first defeat at Actium, which we are told about in scene 10. Enobarbus anguished words thantoniad, the Egyptian admiral, with all their sixty, fly and turn the rudder immediately place the blame on the lovers. Scarus confirms the defeat, and his image we have kissed away kingdoms and provinces immediately lays the blame squarely on the mutual infatuation of Antony and Cleopatra. He focuses more on Cleopatra, labelling her ribaudred nag of Egypt and later likening her flight to that of a maddened cow stung by a gadfly (breeze). However, in scene 13 when she asks whose fault it is, Enobarbus says Antony only, that would make his will lord of his reason. However, his opinion disagrees with the many examples we see throughout the play of Shakespeare presenting Cleopatra as the dominant force in their relationship, thereby arguably also the one to blame for his downfall, since she is the one who pulls the strings. Indeed, in the opening scene Antony is referred to by Philo as a strumpets fool, a term which bears connotations of a lack of control on Antonys part. Shakespeare seems again to want to show the Queens dominance early on, as in act 1, scene 2, Enobarbus jokes, hush, here comes Antony, mocking Antonys lack of power within the relationship. As a tragedy, one of the major questions Shakespeare asks of the audience is whether Antony is to blame for his downfall, or whether he was simply a victim of his fatal flaw. The presentation of Cleopatra as the more dominant force in their relationship is an important factor in this decision. Cleopatra is endlessly described or discussed by other characters. Enobarbus speaks of her infinite variety. For Antony, she can be an enchanting queen or foul Egyptian; for Charmian, a lass unparalleled; for Caesar, dear queen to her face and whore behind her back. Her actions and words display a similarly mercurial range: bravery and cowardice, cruelty and gentleness. Taunting mockery, deviousness, capriciousness, pride, self-indulgence and humility are only a fraction of her infinite variety. At the end of the play she achieves a kind of spendour in her suicide as she strives to fulfil her immortal longings: a reunion with Antony, transcending death itself. It may be an illusion, yet another of the grandiose fantasies she constructs of herself and Antony, but it is thrillingly theatrical, and a dramatically satisfying climax to the rollercoasting emotional ride on which she takes the audience. There are numerous ways of interpreting how Shakespeare wished to present Cleopatra: the archetypal femme fatale, a wily politician, or a cunning charmer. She uses all her considerable skills to retain control of her country, and when that endeavour fails, exercises her independence in choosing death rather than humilation. In her paradoxical behaviour, we see the complex strategies of a woman who has to prosper in a male, militaristic world. In creating Cleopatra, Shakespeare offers the audience many opportunities to reflect on such themes as the nature of love, the exercise of power in personal and political relationships, and the conflicts that ensue in such relationships. The plays constant movement, its recurring images of melting and dissolution, find their reflection in Cleopatras mercurial nature, and in her final attempt to transcend earthly bonds and achieve immortal union with Antony.

Virigina Henderson Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Virigina Henderson - Research Paper Example To facilitate patient care, the paper employs Virginia Henderson’s nursing theory as a profession. The theory of Henderson is significant in nursing profession and it states that nursing is rooted from the needs of human beings (Sitzman and Eichelberger, 2010). This theory is relevant to the personal philosophy of nursing practices because it deals with the role of nursing practice of helping patients to restore or improve their health. The purpose of the research project is to draw one’s attention into the subject of nursing philosophy thoughtfully in order to create awareness of the significance of nursing education. Personal Philosophy The personal philosophy of nursing is to promote the well-being of patients and facilitating patient care; thus improving the quality of life of human beings. The professional values and characteristics that are reflected in the personal philosophy are personal values which should play significant roles in the professionalization of nu rsing with an aim of improving the quality of patients. Therefore, one of the qualities reflected in the personal philosophy is nursing philosophy of superior leadership, which guides one’s actions, behaviors and thoughts; thus, these philosophies are influenced by internal and external forces. One can change who he or she is by simply changing his or her philosophy of leadership with an aim of delivering the best quality of services within the nursing spectrum. The major meta-paradigm concept of nursing as it is incorporated in the personal philosophy involves person, environment, health and nursing practices. First, the concept of the personal philosophy describes a person as an individual and a community who receives health care; thus, their needs should be met. Secondly, it takes into considerations the surrounding environment and this is where the concept emphasizes the need to keep the environment clean and safe in order to improve the health status of human beings. Thi rdly, the concept also focuses the health issues and this is where it emphasizes on the need for maintaining a healthy living through educating the public on the importance of living a healthy life. Lastly, the concept focuses on nursing practices of facilitating a patient care and improving the well-being of patients through proper treatment; thus improving the quality of human beings. Nursing Theorist Nursing care takes varied forms and sometimes it is the function of the nurse to offer proper medication in order to enable the patient to feel physically well. It is also the ability to improve or maintain the health of an individual or perform varied activities that contributes to the health of an individual. For many decades, nurses have made significant efforts of defining nursing; thus from these efforts, varied nursing theories have been developed. One of the nursing theorists is that one which was developed by Virginia Henderson who was also named as Florence Nightingale, the first nursing theorists to note that nursing knowledge is separate and distinctive from therapeutic knowledge (George, 2011). Virginia Henderson’s Nursing theory focused on offering fresh air, proper nutrition, light, maintaining cleanliness in the surrounding environment. In this theory, the domain of nursing describes the subject of nursing profession, concepts, its values and beliefs, as well as, offers the means through which the nurses can promote the health of clients across the spectrum. The maj
